DeAPlaneta Entertainment has recently acquired the international distribution rights for the widely praised young adult animated series, Hamsters, in a groundbreaking deal with Belgian production company Haptic. By: Wee Yan Ling
Hamsters is a comedic young adult animation that originated from Janssens’ webcomics of the same name. The series currently comprises 13 episodes, each being 5 minutes long. The story revolves around two mischievous hamsters, Giovanni and Philippe as they bring humour to the audience from inside their cage. Giovanni aspires to be the perfect hamster for the outside world whereas Philippe is determined to live life on his own terms. The show is imbued with levity and a poignant social commentary which aligns with the experience of many young adults in today’s world.
Hamsters
is co-produced by Haptic, 20STM, and Streamz, with
support from the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF), the Belgian Federal Taxshelter
via Flanders Taxshelter and has amassed praises since its launch on Streamz in
Belgium in 2023. The Belgian press has also commended it to be “beastly good”
and “a charming series” due to its enthralling humour and encouragement to
embrace imperfections.
Carlos
Biern, Content and Distribution Director at DeAPlaneta Kids & Family has
stated: “Hamsters humour is WILDLY FUNNY. Working with unique brands like this,
DeAPlaneta Entertainment's portfolio continues its expansion of shows aimed
specifically at young adult audiences, featuring edgy characters and
situations. Hamsters is, for us, the first of many future additions of IPs we
are starting work on with fresh digital artists that write and direct the way
our new audiences demand.”
Stef
Wouters, Creative Producer at Haptic has declared: “We are delighted to take
this step to distribution with DeAPlaneta Entertainment. We know that we speak
the same language and together we will take care of this sweet love brand and
are certain that our two Hamsters: Giovanni and Philippe, will seduce the world
with their disarming humour. We are sure the world today needs a bit of
humoristic sweetness more than ever.”
