Netflix Withdraws The Brother Sun

Michelle Yeoh is highly disappointed with the removal of the show after one season. By K Dass.

Michelle Yeoh, the talented actress, expressed her feelings of disappointment when Netflix decided not to renew her action-dramedy series, The Brothers Sun, for a second season. Despite its strong viewer and critical reviews, the show faced cancellation after just one season. Although it had decent viewership, spending five weeks in Netflix’s Top 10, the numbers weren’t as high as some other shows.

The series, which premiered in January, featured Michelle Yeoh alongside Justin Chien and Sam Song Li. In the show, Michelle Yeoh portrayed Eileen ‘Mama’ Sun, a character caught up in the world of Taipei gangsters, while Justin Chien played her son, Charles Sun, who must protect his family after his father is shot by a mysterious assassin. It’s unfortunate that fans won’t get to see more of this intriguing gangster drama.

As of now, there hasn’t been any official announcement regarding The Brothers Sun being picked up by another network or streaming service. However, sometimes shows find a second life on different platforms, so fans can still hold out hope for a revival.

Some TV shows that unfortunately met an early demise include Birds of Prey (2002 - 2003): Before becoming a popular movie, Birds of Prey was a superhero TV show featuring Harley Quinn, Batgirl, and Catwoman. Set in a so-called New Gotham, the series had a fun buddy cop dynamic and chaotic adventures. It could have been part of DC’s TV catalogue and tied into the larger DC Extended Universe.

Partner Track (2022): Based on Helen Wan’s novel, Partner Track followed Ingrid Yun (played by Arden Cho), an accomplished attorney striving to become a partner at her law firm while facing racism and sexism. Despite its entertaining workplace drama formula and cliffhanger ending, Netflix decided not to renew it for a second season.

Law & Order: LA (2010 - 2011): Another entry in the Dick Wolf franchise, Law & Order: LA, unfortunately, didn’t move beyond its first season. The show explored criminal cases in Los Angeles but faced cancellation after just one instalment.
