What Happened at the 96th Oscars?

The 96th Oscars, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, successfully concluded on 10 March 2024, with notable winners and amazing performances. By Ching Wai.

US - The 96th annual Academy Awards successfully concluded at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It was held an hour earlier than usual, though it was slightly delayed due to pro-Palestine protests that disrupted traffic. Jimmy Kimmel, hosting the Oscars for the fourth time, smoothly facilitated the flow.

The awards show saw legendary pairings of artists as presenters up on stage like Nicolas Cage and Paul Giamatti, giving rise to opportunities for entertaining back and forth banter between them. Scripted moments such as John Cena being stripped of his clothes as he presented for Best Costume Design kept the night entertaining. Stunning performances by Ryan Gosling in “I’m Just Ken '' and the “What Was I Made For?” stage by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell helped to create the enjoyable atmosphere of the awards ceremony.

Other performers of the night include Jon Batiste, Becky G, Scott George and the Osage Singers. Winners of the night include Oppenheimer with seven Oscars, Godzilla Minus One for best visual effects, and Barbie for best song with Billie Eilish’s original “What Was I Made For?”. While there were many well-deserved wins of the night, there were minor disappointments like how Killers of the Flower Moon did not secure any awards despite having been nominated for ten of them. The successful awards show made it evident that despite all that has happened, with the global pandemic and protests, Hollywood remains capable of producing stories that resonate.
