Billy Dee Williams comments on a potential return to Star Wars and Donald Glover’s take on Lando Calrissian in an interview with Radio Times. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei.
US - 86-year-old actor Billy Dee Williams, best known for his role of Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, recently shared his thoughts on the state of the character and the Disney-owned franchise, having last played the role in the critically-panned yet financially successful Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
Speaking to Radio Times, Williams seemed disinterested in reprising the role, saying “Pay me a lot of money, and I’d sell my soul.”
With Lucasfilm and now 40-year-old actor Donald Glover, who played a younger version of Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018),developing a spin-off film revolving around the character, Williams was also asked about his thoughts on the new Lando Calrissian.
"He's part of a whole new generation. He'll create whatever he needs to create, to bring appeal to the character. He's a very talented young lad and very imaginative. I mean, it's not for me to say what he should do with the character at this stage.”
"I took care of the 20th century, now he’s got to take care of the 21st,” Williams added.
However, despite his praises for Glover and his take on the character, Williams did not seem to like the idea of a different version of Lando Calrissian being portrayed by another actor.
"I had a nice little lunch with [Glover]. He's a delightful young man. Extremely talented. But I don't see him... I mean, when it comes to Lando Calrissian, there's only one Lando Calrissian. I created that character."
Initially planned to be a Disney+ series, the Lando Calrissian spin-off theatrical film starring Donald Glover is still in development with no release window, despite being announced in December 2020 during Disney’s Investor Day.
