TAICCA promotes Taiwanese content and talent to the world at this year’s Series Mania, making known the region’s strong existing soft power. By Ching Wai.
France - Series Mania began in Lille on 15 March, and will take place until 22 March. It is one of Europe’s biggest and most prestigious television series festivals. Winners at the festival will be announced at the closing event. This year, the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) is working to promote the Taiwanese audiovisual scene through its official partnership with Series Mania (since the MOU in 2022) and events at the festival.
Multiple Taiwanese series will be showcased at the event. Three Tears in Borneo is the first Taiwanese series to be selected for its International Panorama, and is competing with eleven other international series for awards. The series is a period drama from Taiwan Public Television Series that depicts the perspective of a Taiwanese monitor of prisoners of war (POWs). TAICCA will promote five other Taiwanese series to international industry representatives at Taiwan Spotlight. The series include Maid of Revenge, Age of Flora, Our Quiet Days, No Hero, and Seven Sins: Greed Kills. TAICCA will also showcase 61 Taiwanese series at its Taiwan Pavilion. The diversity of the dramas shown, from family to BL (boy’s love) dramas, highlights Taiwan’s strong vibrant entertainment scene.
Other than showcases, Taiwanese stories are also prominent features at Series Mania’s forum. Sheng-Jung Phil Tang, a producer at Taiwan’s Greener Grass Productions, will discuss “Understanding the Stake of Owning IPs” during the Series for Global Platform. San Lin, senior film agent from Taiwan’s Grayhawk Agency, will share insights into promotions of the novel Before We Were Monsters into global markets during the expert’s panel organised by SCELF:
“Shoot the Book!” This and the Serial Bridges international series development workshop are events that TAICCA will host to further promote Taiwan’s talent and content. The latter is an international series development programme to nurture talent development for six selected series projects. Ultimately, an open proposal session will be organised during the TCCF Creative Content Conference in Taipei in November, where the projects will be promoted.
Additionally, TAICCA reinforced its partnership with France’s Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC) since 2023, to boost Taiwan’s audiovisual and animation content in Europe. Such partnerships are important for Taiwanese content makers to connect with the international industry, as Homme Tsai, TAICCA’s chairman, had emphasised.
