Ex-Nickelodeon Showrunner in Hot Soup after Extremely Revealing Docu Series Premieres
Dan Schneider, the showrunner behind hit Nickelodeon programmes like iCarly, Victorious and Drake & Josh faces numerous claims of racism, sexism and abuse. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei.
US - Following the premiere of the four-part exposé docu series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV (2024), the famous ex-Nickelodeon showrunner Dan Schneider is facing growing criticism from the public as individuals who have worked with him shed light on his toxic behaviour.
The docuseries contains lots of shocking allegations, with multiple former cast members of the Schneider-produced Nickelodeon comedy series All That (1994-2005) claiming that they were pressured to act in sketches that contained suggestive and racially insensitive humour.
In a lengthy tweet by Amy Berg, an ex-Nickelodeon writer (who worked on All That) and former assistant to Schneider, she said: “[Schneider] introduced me to panic attacks and the stress of working for him caused me to develop a significant heart arrhythmia.”
Schneider, who has worked with the Viacom-owned children’s network for three decades before parting ways in 2018, was also reported to treat young women who worked for him inappropriately, displaying pornography on his computer screen and joking with a writer that he would put on her sketches in a show if she offered him a massage.
Following the mounting allegations, a representative for Schneider said, “Dan expected and asked a lot from his teams. They worked long hours and consistently made successful shows. In the challenges of production, Dan could get frustrated at times, and he understands why some employees found that intimidating and stressful,” the rep said, “But he also knows some people did not have a positive experience, and he is truly sorry for that. Dan knows he should have done better and feels awful about anyone who saw him at his worst, instead of his best.”
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV is now streaming on Max, the streaming service owned by HBO.
