12 Nordic Originals to Premiere on Netflix
With 12 Nordic originals set to premiere on Netflix, the creative industry of the region can expect to have more exposure and recognition worldwide. By Ching Wai.
The Nordic Region - Netflix will be adding 12 new originals to its Nordic slate, as revealed in “Next on Netflix” in Stockholm on 18 March 2024. This includes the first period drama from the region, The New Force, a series written by Jo Nesbø titled Harry Hole, and the series Diary Of A Ditched Girl. The New Force and Harry Hole will premiere on Netflix in 2026, while Diary Of A Ditched Girl will launch in 2025. The increasing content from the Nordic Region on the streaming service sets hopes for the region’s creative industry to be exposed and recognised worldwide.
Produced by Swedish production company Art & Bob, The New Force is a series set in 1958 that follows the story of the country’s first female police officers. It explores their struggles, which largely consist of resistance from colleagues and their own families. The series stars Josefin Asplund, Agnes Rase and Malin Persson, and has writers Patrik Ehrnst, Elin Randin and Antonia Pyk. Meanwhile, the series Harry Hole is in the process of production by Working Title. It is directed by Øystein Karlsen from So Long Marianne and is based on Nesbø’s The Devil’s Star. The Jarowskij’s Swedish drama Diary Of A Ditched Girl is also an adaptation of Amanda Amanda Romare’s novel Halva Malmö.
Other television shows Netflix unveiled include the returning series of Barracuda Queen, a standalone sequel to The Chestnut Man, a second season of reality show Love Is Blind: Sweden from Mastiff, and The Key Series which is based on Alex Ahndoril’s series. Movies that Netflix has confirmed to be included are Little Siberia from Finland, Maybe Baby 2 from Denmark, The Swedish Connection about World War Two hero Gösta Engzell, Danish film The Right Track and Je M’appelle Agneta from Sweden.
The Netflix Vice President of content in the Nordics, Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, praised the creative industry in the Nordic region. Björk stated that it “is outstanding, with some of the most talented people in the world,” and that “[Netflix] members can expect a wonderful mix of films, series, non-fiction, and other great stories from the Nordics.”
