Channel News Asia Going Global

Channel News Asia (CNA) will be distributing its content regionally and globally through new and existing services. By Ching Wai.

Singapore - During its 25th anniversary celebration at Capella Singapore on Tuesday, 19 March, Mediacorp chairman Niam Chiang Meng announced Channel News Asia (CNA)’s global and regional expansion plans. CNA is a local English-language Asian news and current affairs network operating under Singapore’s largest transmedia platform Mediacorp. The network has reached more than 94 million homes and hotel rooms across Asia Pacific and the Middle East. An average of more than 10 million unique visitors consume CNA’s digital content every month.

Internationally, CNA will be introduced in North America, the U.K., and Canada for viewers who are interested in news and documentaries about Asia. The rollout of CNA’s content will occur in phases over this year across different platforms such as television streaming services, Youtube, and the CNA website. To improve on its on-site understanding and reporting of China-related news, CNA is also looking into opening a new bureau in Shenzhen, and positioning more correspondents in Beijing and Shanghai.

Regionally, CNA is expanding into Indonesia through launching a website in Bahasa Indonesia, cna.id. Additionally, Mediacorp reported that the network has signed a research collaboration agreement with Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to build an English-to-Bahasa Indonesia AI translation tool. A team of Bahasa Indonesia editors will check both translated and original news reports and features before they are published.

Other upcoming efforts from CNA include a new one-hour bulletin, East Asia Tonight, which will air on CNA every weekday at 6pm beginning in April. AI-generated summaries known as FAST have also been introduced to help create articles on CNA’s app in efforts to harness AI (artificial intelligence). Mediacorp chairman Niam Chiang Meng had said amidst the announcements that CNA remains committed to constantly develop with the changing global mediascape. As CNA continues to produce timely and edifying content for viewers to enjoy and be informed, this expansion will hopefully present a good impression of Singapore’s media to the world.
