Pirates of the Caribbean Reboot Announced by Franchise Producer

Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer teased in a recent interview an upcoming reboot that is unlikely to star Johnny Depp. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei.

US - In a recent interview with comicbook.com, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that a reboot of the Disney-owned franchise was in the works.

During the interview, Bruckheimer was asked about the future of the franchises he has helped produce, including Top Gun (1986) and its 2022 sequel, to which he replied: “It’s hard to tell. You don’t know. You really don’t know. You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know.

“Because with ‘Top Gun’ you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does ‘Top Gun,’ I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot ‘Pirates,’ so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

Despite 60-year-old American actor Johnny Depp headlining all five films in the franchise from 2003 to 2017, Bruckheimer’s words seem to imply that the franchise is heading in a new direction, with an all-new cast.

The reboot seems to be separate from the female-led spin-off film announced in June 2020 which will star Margot Robbie, best known for her roles as Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe and Barbie in the 2023 Barbie film. In addition to this female-led spin-off, Bruckheimer had previously stated in 2022 that another spin-off “with a younger cast” was in the works, though it is currently unclear if this project is separate from the newly-announced reboot.

The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean reboot has no announced cast or release window yet, but Depp is not expected to have a major role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the film.
