Bavaria Fiction Launches Icon Docs Amidst Growing Demand for Factual Programming

Icon Docs is the new documentary brand under Bavaria Fiction that will bring quality productions for regional and global audiences. By Ching Wai.

Europe - The documentary unit of German-headquartered production company Bavaria Fiction has launched its own label, Icon Docs. The new documentary brand seeks to produce high-quality content with news value and a strong social relevance. The brand is led by the head of documentaries, Emanuel Rotstein.

The managing director of content at Bavaria Fiction, Marcus Ammon, observed an upward trend in global demand for factual programming. “We have therefore established Icon Docs as an independent label in the German and international market, with our documentary team centred around the renowned leadership of Emanuel Rotstein,” Ammon said.

Icon Docs will participate in more national and international co-productions on top of its repertoire of in-house and commissioned productions. Existing projects include Car Park Murder - Who Killed Charlotte Böhringer? for Sky Documentaries and Ultra-Orthodox: Rabbi Akiva’s Journey to Freedom for ZDF Enterprises and the 3sat television channel. The new label also has a few projects in development, such as Hitler in Hollywood, and The Park - New York’s Revolutionary Heart.

Rotstein had been a senior director of programming at A+E Networks Germany for the linear and nonlinear pay-TV channels The History Channel and Crime + Investigation until 2021.

Rotstein said of Icon Docs, “We want to move people, shake them up and build bridges between cultures. With a clear focus on current, political and investigative topics, biographies and contemporary history, we create sophisticated content that deserves the attention of a broad, global audience.”

Despite being a new label, Icon Docs is not building up from scratch. As a brand of Bavaria Fiction, one of the most successful production companies in Europe, the documentary label already has an eye on current trends and well-founded confidence to produce global, quality content. Icon Docs can therefore be expected to achieve success in both the European market and the global market.
