US - American media personality Kim Kardashian is being sued by The Judd Foundation, for showcasing a counterfeit table in a 2022 promotional video for her makeup company Skkn by Kim, and passing the table off as the authentic product designed by the late Donald Judd.

In the now-private YouTube video, which was a guided tour of the Skkn by Kim office, Kardashian can be seen showcasing the table, saying: “These Donald Judd tables are really amazing and totally blend in with the seats.”

However, according to the Judd Foundation, the table featured in the video was a knockoff manufactured by Clements Design, resulting in the filing of the lawsuit against Kardashian. The Judd Foundation added in their court filing that, even if the furniture were to be authentic, the foundation forbids the usage of their furniture for marketing and promotional purposes.

The furniture Kardashian showcased are supposedly based on the La Mansana Table 22 and the accompanying Chair 84, which each go for US$90,000 and US$9,000 respectively.

The Judd Foundation stated in the court filing: “Consumers who watched the video or read the media coverage were misled to believe Ms. Kardashian’s tables and chairs were authentic Donald Judd pieces.”

“These poor-quality imitations masquerading as authentic Donald Judd tables and chairs harm the Donald Judd brand. Consumers will see the cheap knockoffs… and erroneously associate (the) low-grade pieces with the Donald Judd brand,” the lawsuit adds.

Rainer Judd, president of the foundation and daughter of Donald Judd, said in a complaint: “As an artist’s foundation, our primary mission is to protect and preserve his work. Ms. Kardashian’s furniture is irrefutably fake. The existence of inauthentic furniture undermines the integrity of his original work, which includes specifications of design, craftsmanship and materials."
