China - Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has enjoyed a US$44.6 million opening weekend in China from Friday to Sunday, the biggest opening for any Hollywood film in the country this year.

Though smaller than the US$66 million Chinese opening of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the 2024 blockbuster’s monstrous opening weekend accounted for nearly 70% of the country’s weekend box office, knocking Kung Fu Panda 4 to second place in that film’s second weekend. So far, Kung Fu Panda 4 has earnt US$34.5 million in its first 10 days.

IMAX has also reported that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earnt US$7.5 million from IMAX screens in China, or 17% of the film’s opening weekend.

Elsewhere, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has also topped box offices in the US with a US$80 million opening, US$12.8 million in Mexico, US$5.6 million in Australia, US$5.5 million in India, and US$5.3 million in the UK, with an estimated global total of US$194 million.

Ever since the pandemic, Hollywood films have not been doing as well as they used to do in China. Currently, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has the fourth largest post-pandemic opening for a Hollywood title in China, below Jurassic World Dominion (2022), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Fast X (2023).

Directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened in cinemas on March 29 in the US to mixed reviews, with a 54% critics score and 92% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
