Disney+ To Start Password Sharing Crackdown Beginning in June 2024

Disney+ will begin its password sharing crackdown in select markets in June, with a global rollout by September 2024. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei

US - Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that Disney+ will begin cracking down on password sharing in selected markets this June, before expanding globally in September.

"In June, we'll be launching our first real foray into password-sharing, just a few countries in a few markets. But then it will grow significantly with a full rollout in September,” Iger revealed in a CNBC interview on Thursday April 4.

Details on when in June and September the crackdown will begin, as well as how much users will have to pay to share accounts with another household, have not yet been revealed.

The news comes after password-sharing terms were shared with new Disney+ subscribers since January 25 and existing subscribers on March 14. Disney+ also received a new cyan colour scheme following the merging of Hulu and Disney+ into one app in the US, a move that will help facilitate the upcoming crackdown.

Disney+ competitor Netflix had previously implemented an extremely successful password sharing crackdown, which saw them gaining 8.8 million subscribers in the quarter following their crackdown, and then 13.1 million more in the quarter following that.
