Catch Legendary Kung Fu Superstar Sammo Hung in upcoming Asian Film Awards Academy Masterclass

The legendary Hong Kong Kung Fu Superstar Sammo Hung will attend the Masterclass Series from 3-5 May 2024 in Singapore. By Ching Wai.

Singapore - Hong Kong’s first-generation kung fu superstar Sammo Hung will participate in the Asian Film Awards Academy’s Masterclass Series from 3 to 5 May, as announced by the Asian Film Awards Academy and the Singapore Film Society on 5 April. Other activities include screenings of Hung’s movie classics during the first-of-its-kind “Filmmaker in Focus” special segment. The masterclass programme is part of the 12th Singapore Chinese Film Festival (SCFF) happening from 26 April to 5 May this year.

Hung’s iconic films to be screened include Warriors Two (1978), Encounters of the Spooky Kind (1980), Winners and Sinners (1983), The Bodyguard (2016), and Painted Faces (1988). Hung will attend the pre-screening greeting and post-screening Q&A on 3 May and 5 May respectively.

The Masterclass Series is held in hopes of introducing Hong Kong and Asian filmmakers to the public, and help them better understand the film industry through extensive lectures about the behind-the-scenes and creative processes of filmmaking. The programme is organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy, co-organised by the Singapore FIlm Society, and financially supported by Create Hong Kong, the Film Development Fund, and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore.

Kenneth Tan, Chairman of the Singapore Film Society, said, "... it is a great pleasure to have Sammo HUNG present his five masterpieces and to exchange views with the industry and fans.” Josie Lin, Asian Film Awards Academy Executive Director, said, “It is a great opportunity for the Asian Film Awards Academy to invite Director Sammo HUNG to participate in the Masterclass Series, and I am confident that the local audience will get to know Sammo HUNG better through this event, his philosophy of making different films, and the glorious history of Hong Kong cinema.”

The award-winning 72 year old is well known as an actor, action choreographer, director and producer. The Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th Asian FIlm Awards last year solidifies Hung’s legacy.
