With cinemas and theatres closed down and having to endure the economic downturn, the film and television industry in Canada has generated an astounding $11.3 billion in operational revenue during 2020, a stark 20.2% increase from the previous year, 2019.
So what makes them a thriving industry and makes them millions? Below are some examples on what makes the industry booming with revenue.
Schitt’s Creek
The series has set a record at the 72nd Primetime Emmys for the most wins in a single season for a comedy, clinching 9 awards in total. The narrative of the show features a formerly wealthy and dysfunctional family moving into a small town after a twist of economic fate. As the series progresses, the members begin to warm up with one another and call the community home.
Viewers find comfort in the show as it brings them a soothing kind of warmth, and a smile to their faces despite the dreadful pandemic. The Roses family were stuck and uncomfortable in their new place initially, however, they learn to navigate their way through the uncomfortable and realise that as long as they have one another, they have a home and that is more than enough.
The series became a defining show during the pandemic due to how the viewers are able to resonate behind the screen. As we were forced to spend time in our homes for extensive periods with our family, we were going through a similar circumstance as the characters in the show.
Orphan Black
What makes Orphan Black so distinct is its characterisation and the way they portray their cast. Their performances are superlative, being able to convey the profoundly crafted script with a touch of comedy value.
The success of the series is greatly attributed to Maslany's impeccable portrayal of the multiple characters, completed with the well-crafted storyline. The storyline allows the actress to display her profound talent in playing seven distinct characters which allows the series to bring out the storytelling forte.
The show introduces Sarah Manning, who discovers who she really is. A clone. What thickens the plot is the mystery shrouding around the origin of the clones and their assassins. The profoundly and well developed plot and relationships established helped add flavour to the already interesting supernatural element embedded into the show.
The show highly touches on the struggle for identity within a world where you are one of the many duplicates, and the show has been elevated beyond its premise.
Murdoch Mysteries
If you are a mystery fan, this show is not to be missed. This is definitely a binge-worthy series and you will not be able to leave your seat for episodes on end. The show is embellished with lots of enthralling, mind-blowing concepts and characters that you will undisputedly favour.
The series is detail oriented and is embellished with many details, hence viewers can see the puzzle slowly being pieced together as they progress through the series.
The series is also ahead of its time as they navigate topics such as homosexuality, racism, as well as women’s rights which encourages Murdoch to recount his own beliefs and values. Despite being set in the olden times, he usually has a very “modern” mindset and ideas.
