Description
The formidable duo of Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Andy Lau reunite in The Goldfinger, a sleek crime and corruption epic that spans 15 tumultuous years in Hong Kong. B
Directed and written by Felix Chong, The Goldfinger the backdrop of the film echoes the city’s transition from British rule in the 1970s. The film takes a departure from its predecessor and draws inspiration from the Scorsese classics, The Wolf of Wall Street and Goodfellas and takes on a unique narrative.
We are introduced to the charismatic and sly Henry Ching, portrayed immaculately by Tony Leung. Ching is a penniless opportunist and orchestrated his own meteoric rise in real estate as he puts on the facade as a wealthy property developer. His portrayal is parallel with the bankrupt outsider to a global conglomerate tycoon through a web of investments, fraud and deception.
The film unfolds a game of cat-and-mouse with Andy Lau playing the role of a desiccated crime investigator from the Independent Commision Against Corruption (ICAC) in the 1980s. His character pursues Ching, the head of the Carmen Century Group, as the latter has built up a fortune through bold gambles and the unethical use of shares. The pursuit lasts for years, which weaves an intricate and compelling narrative that tactfully navigates the multiple timelines.
The Goldfinger enthralls the audience and captivates attention with their fast-paced and complex plot as it seamlessly threads on the past and present. The high budget ceiling of the production helps to bring the period setting to life as we are immersed in the vibrant and opulent Hong Kong.
Leung’s masterful portrayal of Ching is the highlight as he revels in the role of a magnetic con man, paired with the movie’s beautiful execution, reminiscent of the early 00s masterpiece Internal Affairs sets it apart which creates a compelling and visual feast.
In essence, as Ching’s empire unfolds amidst the ever-changing landscape of Hong Kong, the film engages the audience in navigating the journey of ambition, deception and the relentless pursuit of justice.
