Showtime’s streaming app will close on 30 April 2024. The only way to stream programmes by the American network will be with a subscription to the Paramount+ With Showtime plan on Paramount+ beginning 1 May 2024. By Ching Wai.
US - The U.S. Showtime streaming app will be closing on 30 April this year. This comes after Paramount had integrated Showtime with Paramount+ just 10 months prior and rebranded the US$11.99 per month ad-free streaming package as Paramount+ With Showtime.
Paramount CEO Bob Bakish said when the company posted the full-year 2023 financials in February that the group had passed “peak streaming losses” a year earlier than expected thanks in part to price increases and the integration of Showtime into Paramount+, the latter of which contributed to its strong content offering which in turn raised profits.
Paramount has plans to change up its streaming programming strategy: local-language programming internationally will be cut back, while “Hollywood hits” that have greater appeal worldwide will be its focus. Programming costs will also be cut more generally, with plans for a “programming and restructuring charge” of about US$1 billion in the first quarter. US$200 million of the budget will be attributed to restructuring costs.
Showtime’s online help centre writes, “Now that subscribers can access their favourite Showtime programs on Paramount+ by subscribing to the Paramount+ with Showtime plan, the Showtime streaming service will shut down on April 30, 2024. Current Showtime streaming subscribers will continue to have access to the Showtime streaming service until it is shut down on April 30, 2024.”
Streaming of Showtime programmes will only be possible with a subscription to the Paramount+ With Showtime plan on Paramount+ starting from 1 May 2024.
