BBC Alum Named UK’s Film and TV Charity’s CEO

Former BBC employee Marcus Ryder has been appointed as the new CEO of the UK's Film and TV Charity. By: Talia

Ryder will be taking up his position in earl autumn, replacing Alex Pumfrey, who shifted to move to UK Comcaster ITV as its director of strategic partnerships in March. Ryder’s recent position as the head of external consultancies at the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity has increased his expertise in exploring and increasing diversity across the media industry.

Prior to taking up this position, Ryder also served as the current affairs commissioner and exec producer for the BBC and the chair of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He is currently a trustee of the Press Pad Charitable Foundation.

Amidst the backdrop of a cost-of-living crisis and various challenges impacting the film and television industry, Marcus Ryder has joined the Film and TV Charity to bolster its efforts in supporting industry workers facing uncertainty.

As the industry faced unprecedented challenges during the pandemic, the charity demonstrated its commitment to aiding those affected. By extending support to over 7,000 individuals, the organisation distributed a significant sum of over $6.5 million USD to individuals whose livelihoods had been adversely impacted.

Ryder said, “The Film and TV Charity is an incredible source of support for people working behind the scenes across the film, TV, and cinema industry, acting as a vital enabler for those facing disadvantage, financial hardship and poor mental health.”

“The organisation and I also share a deep-seated understanding that the charity will only be able to fulfil its core aims if it helps the industry address issues of equality, diversity and inclusion. I cannot wait to get to work to shape and implement a shared, ambitious strategy to make further strides across all of these priorities,” he added.
