Peter Chan delivers a stirring widescreen melodrama set in Shanghai of the 1940s

Peter Chan's highly-anticipated crime thriller She's Got No Name, which secured a berth in recent Cannes Film Festival lineup this May, is poised for a Chinese theatrical release this year, according to an announcement.

Hong Kong - She’s Got No Name is a 2024 Chinese–Hong Kong crime drama film directed and co-produced by Peter Chan. The film, which had its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, is based on a true story of an unsolved murder case in Shanghai. The plot revolves around a housewife named Zhan Zhou, who is accused of gruesomely murdering her husband. Set in a bustling alleyway during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai in the 1940s, the film delves into the complexities of the case and the impact it has on Zhan’s life and the court of public opinion.

Cast includes Zhang Ziyi as Zhan Zhou, Du Kani as the young Zhan Zhou, Michelle Yeoh as the elderly Zhan Zhou, Lei Jiayin appears as Xue Zhiwu, a deputy Police Commissioner working for the Japanese puppet regime. Other notable cast members include Eric Wang, Jackson Yee, Yang Mi, and Zhao Liying.

The film’s production involved recreating the real Jiangyuan Lane in the 1940s, and principal photography took place in Shanghai. The theme song, titled “She’s Got No Name,” is a duet by Gigi Yim and was produced by Wan Pin Chu. Peter Chan’s departure from his comfort zone with this film is sure to reopen interest in one of China’s most notorious murder cases.
