The WWE star claimed that he has been moved by the support he has garnered from The People’s Fund of Maui following the wildfires that occurred last month, whilst acknowledging those who spoke about their problems with the fundraiser. By: Dylan Low
The famous producer and actor answered to the public critique of the fund, which he collaborated with alongside Oprah Winfrey in August announced on social media. The fundraiser started with an initial $10 million from Winfrey and Johnson, as they requested the help of the public to contribute $1200 per month donations to those affected.
While they stated their fundraiser was inspired by a similar effort by musician Dolly Parton, many argued the celebrities’ wealth status meant they could contribute more to the fund themselves, rather than asking for financial help from them.
“When we first launched the fund, there was some backlash,” Johnson admitted in an Instagram video posted on Sunday. “I get it and I completely understand, and I could’ve been better — and next time I will be better.”
He stated in the caption addressing the criticism, saying his fans and community “only know how to be real with each other.
“You always tell me the truth — good or bad — I’ll always appreciate and protect that straight talk between us, you have my word to always listen, learn, grow and do better,” he continued. “I’ve never launched a fund before — trust me, I’m a quick study and learn my lessons fast. I totally get it and I appreciate you.”
In the social media video, Johnson saluted the ‘strength of our people” in Maui and applauded the resilience of the displaced islanders, calling it “beautiful and inspiring”.
“Watching families and community come together after this tragedy is inspirational, and I’m proud of our Polynesian people. Thank you to everyone who has helped by sending resources, love and prayers to all people affected by the fires and a loving mahalo and respect to our OG cultural leaders, our local community organisations, and all our first responders and every person who came together to help our people,” he expressed further.
