Legend of Zelda Film in Development by Nintendo and Maze Runner Director

Known as Nintendo’s most popular video games in 1986, it is set to develop into a movie film in the near future. By: Dylan Low

Nintendo announced recently that it is collaborating with Avi Arad’s Arad Productions to create a live-action film based on the iconic video game franchise, first introduced back in 1986.

Wes Ball, director of the famous film franchise Maze Runner and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has agreed to lead the project. The movie will be co-funded by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Nintendo announced in a press release, “By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles.”

Nintendo video game creator and developer Shigeru Miyamoto stated in a post on X, “I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.”

He continued, “We have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

This video game adaptation follows the lead of The Super Mario Bros. film, which features Chris Pratt, Charlie Day and Anya Taylor-Joy. In June, the movie passed Disney's Frozen, earning the second-highest grossing animated film of all time with $1.283 billion in revenue, only marginally behind Frozen II.

Made by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, The Legend of Zelda depicts elf warrior Link and Princess Zelda as they fight to rescue their kingdom and defeat Ganon - an evil warlord and demon king.
