Thema and Globo Strike Exclusive Distribution Mandatory Deal in Asian Market

Looking to further extend their influence in Asia, Globo has agreed on a distribution contract with THEMA, by Canal+. From January 2024 onwards, THEMA will oversee Globo's titles distribution regionwide, distributing its success stories to brand new audiences. By: Dylan Low

Premium content that lands in Asia include drama classics, new releases and Globoplay Originals, which make up the Brazilian company's diverse collection. With 27,000 hours of recent productions in 2022, Globo has become the biggest media company in Latin America, which takes charge of trending Brazillian streaming platform Globoplay.

Globo’s collaboration with THEMA is inclusive of premium and current titles like Land of Desire, a serial drama that broadcasts in primetime in Brazil, alongside The Others, the most viewed series available on Globoplay in countries such as Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore. These are strategic territories where THEMA's local proficiency and market knowledge backs Globo's content regional influence. Globo will continue working directly on its format sales activities, with the objective of making the company's content accessible for local adaptations.

In their aim to acknowledge the start of their ambitious and inspiring partnership, Globo and THEMA will be making their appearance in 2023 ATF Tradeshow together, located at booth L16, which takes place 5th-8th December in Singapore.

Fábio Mauro, Content Distribution and Partnerships at Globo, mentioned, “The Asian market is very important for Globo and we want to increasingly strengthen our presence in the region. We are currently exhibiting God Save the King in Japan and last year we exhibited Brazil Avenue, also in Japan, in addition to Under Pressure and Hidden Truths in Vietnam, between others. With THEMA, we will have local experts who will help us better understand the market and its cultural differences. This way, we will be more assertive in taking our content to new audiences.”

Alexandre Bac, Managing Director at THEMA Asia Pacific, remarked, “We are delighted to partner with Globo and bring such powerful contents in this part of the world. We aim to develop further Globo's footprint in the region and support local players with a new selection of appealing series to entertain their subscribers.”
