I.E. Entertainment to Showcase Coolie Series at ATF Launch

I.E. Entertainment, led by industry veterans Indra and Erlina Suharjono, takes on global distribution for Cathay Film Company's groundbreaking TV miniseries, Coolie. By: Wee Yan Ling

Groundbreaking series Coolie, is scheduled to make its debut at the Asia Television Forum & Market (ATF) in Singapore. The eight-episode drama was shot in both English and Chinese and has started production in the Dominican Republic. The series is directed by Arvin Chen, renowned for his works in Love in Taipei and Mama Boy.

The rise of outlaws of the African slave trade peaked during the mid-1800s which led Cuban plantation owners to turn to the indentured servants from China and other parts of Asia, known as ‘coolies.’ Coolies were subjected to slave-like conditions and had to integrate into Cuban society as they continued the country’s fight for independence from Spain. Their impact had led to the establishment of Chinatowns on an international scale.

Creator Meileen Choo and executive producer In-Ah Lee had brought about a novel take on the perspective to the historical narrative. Ed Buhr had also helmed the series with his role as the producer and promises an enthralling series that touch the hearts of international viewers.

Erlina Suharjono and Indra had displayed their enthusiasm, “Meileen has created a story that is fresh and truly visionary, which will undoubtedly connect with a global audience. We're excited to bring such a compelling project to the ATF."

As the series is brought into the international arena, it aims to tell the story of the integral chapter of history brought to you with the unique narrative and diverse ensemble cast.
