HBO Films has acquired the rights to Mark Chiusano’s book titled “The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos,” which was released on November 28th. The film originates from Frank Rich, who was the executive producer for HBO series Veep and Succession. Mike Makowsky, who also wrote Bad Education, is slated to write the screenplay for the George Santos film, in which he will also executive produce alongside Rich. Chiusano will be the consulting producer.

The film is noted to be a “forensic and darkly comic look” at the remarkable congressional race in Long Island, New York, which elected Santos to Congress.

According to the official logline, the film narrates “the story of a seemingly minor local race that wound up a battle for the soul of Long Island, and unexpectedly carved the path for the world’s most famous (and now disgraced) congressman. The Gatsby-esque journey of a man from nowhere who exploited the system, waged war on truth and swindled one of the wealthiest districts in the country to achieve his American Dream.”

The movie announcement arrives after the news of Santos being dismissed from Congress on Friday due to ethics violations, meaning he becomes the sixth U.S. House member in history to be expelled and the first in over two decades. With a score of 311 to 114, the house has voted to remove the New York Grand Old Party (GOP) congressman, with 105 Republicans voting in support of the expulsion resolution.
