Chai Yee-Wei’s Wonderland comes to SGIFF

Wonderland takes centre stage at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) after winning the audience award at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. By: Wee Yan Ling

Chai is renowned for his films Blood Ties and That Girl in Pinafore and is here to present his fifth feature which revolves around two middle-aged fathers, Loke and Tan. The two form an unlikely bond when Loke sells his house to support his daughter’s overseas studies venture. The two form a strong bond as Tan assists Loke in translating his letters to Eileen, which led to the newfound knowledge of a tragic revelation.

Featuring Mark Lee, Peter Yu, and Xenia Tan, the film delves into the themes of aspirations and the pursuit of the American dream. Chai drew inspiration from his own experiences having studied in the U.S. during his time and aims to analyse the societal inclination to view the West as a Wonderland.

Wonderland is scheduled for commercial release in Singapore in 2024. Chang had raised concerns of marketing his film that diverges from the typical horror and comedy fare and had raised plans for a different approach, which encompasses grassroots-level engagement and platforms such as iTunes movies and SVOD.

Chai has intentions of balancing his hyperlocal directorial projects and producing works of international appeal. He currently has three series in the making and a treatment for an animated film whose inspiration was derived from her paintings, showcasing the multifaceted nature of her creative pursuits.
