Past Lives, May December, and American Fiction Lead 2024 Spirit Awards Nominations

The 2024 Independent Spirit Award nominations were unveiled stating the trio of films, featuring American Fiction, May December and Past Lives. All three films are positioned in the Best Feature category and competing against All of Us Strangers, Passages and We Grown Now.

For the small screen, The Last of Us, a science-fiction from HBO and I’m a Virgo which features absurdist miniseries which is produced by Amazon and crafted by Boots Riley. Both series are leading the nominations with four nominations each.

In a departure from the television category, the film nominations adhere to a strict budgetary criterion, requiring productions to be made for less than $30 million. This eligibility rule explains the absence of early awards season favorites like Searchlight’s Poor Things and Netflix’s Nyad and Maestro. Despite adhering to the budget requirements, some notable films experienced surprising oversights, such as the critically acclaimed The Holdovers, nominated for four awards but absent from the Best Feature category.
