The Boy and the Heron, a fantasy animated coming-of-age film from animation filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, earned $12.8 million in its opening weekend, to be the first original anime production to lead the domestic box office. By: Dylan Low
A GKids film production, it is currently screening in Imax and other premium large format auditoriums, which added to its record-breaking revenues and helped lock in its first-place finish.
Its success has also benefitted from not having much film competition, with holiday blockbuster movies such as Wonka and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still yet to make its debut in the coming weeks.
This successful animated movie signifies Miyazaki’s unexpected homecoming to film screens, not making films in over a decade, as the producer who has made classics like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke stated his retirement in 2013 when his previous film The Wind Rises premiered. The Boy and the Heron has been steadily screening worldwide, generating up to $84 million, with $56 million of the sum coming from Miyazaki’s home country of Japan.
