Lionsgate Studios made a surprising announcement for the release of Saw XI, joined with their plans for their 11th instalment in the popular horror franchise to screen only nine months from now. By: Dylan Low
The project was made official via an Instagram post, which depicts Roman numerals against an eerie Saw background which showcases the September 27th, 2024 release date. It was joined alongside a short and concise caption, “The game continues.”
Announcing a date for next fall is noted to be an astonishing achievement, as their last franchise instalment Saw X, debuted theatres only two months ago on September 29th. This makes for a fast turnaround, less than a year for the franchise. This is not the first time however. After the original Saw film performed well, Saw II was quickly approved and screened in theatres 364 days after the first.
Saw X put up a great display at the box office, generating $53 million in North America and $107 million in worldwide revenue, compared to a $13 million production budget.
Lionsgate has yet to disclose any details about the cast involved in the Saw XI film, with the studio representatives not being available for comment.
The precious tenth edition of Saw depicts main antagonist star Tobin Bell reprising his role of John Kramer, as the serial torture crime killer Jigsaw. The 81-year-old actor, who debuted in the first Saw back in 2004, claimed a lead role for the latest film, situated between the first and second instalments of the series and goes in-depth into Kramer’s experience below the border looking for a brain tumour treatment and retaliation against a selection of medical con artists. Shawnee Smith also plays a recurring role as Jigsaw’s apprentice Amanda Young. Kevin Greutert, who joined Saw as an editor before leading the sixth and seventh movies by directing.
