Voiceover of Disney’s Coco, Ana Ofelia Murguía Dies at 90

The Mexican actress who was best known for the titular character of Disney and Pixar’s 2017 animated movie Coco passed on peacefully on December 31, Sunday according to BBC News reports. She was 90. By: Cassia Ling

Coco narrates the young protagonist as he ventures to the land of the dead during Mexico’s Día de los Muertos. The project has clinched two Academy Awards accolades, for best animated feature and original song for Remember Me. The actress voices over for the role of Mama Coco, as her great-grandson, Miguel helps to bring recollection of her father to her. At the emotional pinnacle, Mama Coco sings the film’s theme song, Remember Me, with Miguel.

The animated movie was extolled as it brings the Mexican culture closer to audiences through cinematic screenings, allowing audiences to appreciate its culture and the portrayal of deep subjects including death through a children’s movie.

Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature had paid homage to Murguía on X/Twitter, mentioning that her “career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico.”

During her acting trajectory, the actress has claimed the Golden Ariel special lifetime achievement in 2011 in a ceremony, putting the best of Mexican’s cinema on a pedestal. Murguía has also clinched best supporting actress at the Ariel awards, which commensurate with Mexico's Oscar award in the years 1979, 1986 and 1996.

Raking more than a hundred acting credits, the actress debuted on an episode of the Mexican television soap opera, La Tormenta. Her most esteemed roles during her career includes The Queen of the Night, The Queen of the Night, and Life Sentence.
