The Color Purple Makes its Debut to Homes

The award winner for Best Musical, Best Ensemble and Best Music at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, will finally be available to watch from home. The film can now be rented or purchased on digital platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV from January 16th, and will premiere on 4K UHD, DVD and Blu-ray on March 12th. By: Dylan Low

The digital and physical releases comprise of multiple special features including three featurettes with director Blitz Bazawule, filmmakers and the star-studded cast about the production of the film, coupled with behind-the-scenes rehearsal content showcasing the transition of Alice Walker’s novel into a musical.

Fantasia Barrino, who featured as Celie in the 2007 Broadway edition of The Color Purple, reprises her role in the new Warner Bros. adaptation, produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. The story talks about Celie, a Black Southern woman in the early 20th century abused by her father and husband.


The main cast consists of Danielle Brooks as Sofia (a role she portrayed in a 2015 stage revival), Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Mister, H.E.R. as Squeak, Halle Bailey as Young Nettie, Corey Hawkins as Harpo and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Mama.

Taking into account the stacked cast and stellar reviews, the film is expected to garner a few Oscar nominations. Brooke and Henson could be competing in the supporting actress race, while the film may feature as a potential contender for best picture. The film also has a possibility to win Oscars with its crafts, including veteran costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck and cinematographer Dan Laustsen.
