Netflix unveiled the second season of the survival drama series from director Hwang Dong-hyuk in a letter to shareholders recently.

Spanning up to nine episodes, the first season of Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game was initially launched in 2021. The drama, which showcased a deadly contest among poor competitors for a chance to win ₩45.6 billion, proved to be an all-time blockbuster series for Netflix and was nominated for multiple awards with 14 Emmys, including best drama series (first for a non-English-language series), winning six of them.

Squid Game also broke records at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards by becoming the first non-English-language series and first Korean series to secure nominations for casting in a drama series, actor in a drama series (Lee Jung-jae), actress in a drama series (Jung Ho-yeon) and stunt ensemble. Lee Jung-jae and Ho-yeon were presented the awards, with Squid Game also winning three Golden Globe Awards, inclusive of the best TV drama.

After months of speculation over the question whether the show would get a second season, Netflix confirmed in January 2022 that the series is going ahead with a season 2. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos stated during an analyst call, “Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

The Squid Game universe has continuously grown to additionally feature an unscripted competition series, titled Squid Game: The Challenge, and an upcoming video game.
