Geraldine Viswanathan Replaces Ayo Edebiri in Marvel’s Thunderbolts

Geraldine Viswanathan has joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel film, taking the spot of Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role after the Emmy-winning The Bear star leaves the project due to scheduling. By: Dylan Low

Viswanathan joins a large cast of actors who portrays some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s popular anti-heroes, such as Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker (aka U.S. Agent), Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr (aka Ghost), Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Although specified plot details remain undisclosed, the film will be viewed as Marvel’s version of the DC’s anti-hero team the Suicide Squad, with the characters grouped to do the missions that the Avengers would not do.

Filmmaker Jake Schreier, who directed Paper Towns and Beef, takes the helm for the film. The film’s script writer is Eric Pearson, who was also part of Black Widow.

With Viswanathan starting her career in 2018 teen-comedy Blockers, she has starred alongside Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney in 2019’s Bad Education, partnering with Dacre Montgomery in 2020 romcom The Broken Hearts Gallery, and opposite Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks and Sarah Snook in 2023’s The Beanie Bubble. She also featured in the TBS comedy anthology series Miracle Workers with Daniel Radcliffe, Steve Buscemi and Karan Soni.

Edebiri is the second star to leave the Thunderbolts set in recent months. Steven Yeun left earlier in January, stating that “time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it.” Lewis Pullman, notable for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, has replaced him in the role which remains undisclosed.
