Suits Dominates Streaming in 2023, Breaking Records with Highest-Ever Viewership

Legal drama Suits had clinched the title of being the most-streamed show over the course of 2023, with regards to Nielsen’s year-end rankings. The series had enjoyed a record-breaking run on streaming platforms during summer and fall which had amassed an impeccable 57.7 billion minutes of viewing which had broken the record set by The Office in 2020.


What makes the accomplishment even more extraordinary is that the series had achieved this milestone despite the influx of library series dominating the top 10 spots in the year-end rankings. Ted Lasso, an original show on Apple TV+ managed to solidify the title of the most-viewed original series across Nielsen-measured platforms which is a departure from the usual Netflix dominance in this category.

2023 had witnessed the growth of 21% in streaming volume with U.S. viewers collectively spending more than 11 trillion minutes, which is the equivalent to more than 21 million years on streaming platforms. The dominance in streaming only continues to increase as it amounted to 36% of all TV use in the same year as compared to the 30% for cable and estimated 23% for broadcast networks. 


A salient point to note in the streaming arena is the shift away from exclusive content owners as several platforms had turned to licensing as a revenue generator and marketing tool. While seven of the top 10 series of 2023 streamed on Netflix, renowned titles such as Suits had found home on multiple platforms, including Peacock and Hulu. 


Suits, originally a USA Network legal drama, had been catapulted into fame after its Netflix premier as it has amassed the highest year-end total viewing minutes ever recorded by Nielsen. During its exclusive period on Peacock, the show had garnered an average of 191 million minutes of viewing weekly which marked a tenfold increase, highlighting the immense influence of the streaming giant on shared titles.
