The long-standing legal drama, Law & Order, which has actor Sam Waterson portray District Attorney Jack McCoy for more than 400 episodes is set to exit the series. The final episode with Waterson will be airing on Thursday, 22 February. After this departure, the renowned actor from ABC’s Scandal, Tony Goldwyn will be taking on his role.

Waterson has been a centerpiece of the drama since 1994. Despite the original series winding up in 2010, he reinstated his role in the 21st season revival in 2022. His character, Jack McCoy has also made entrances in spin-offs such as Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and the movie Exited: A Law & Order Movie.

His departure had prompted a heartfelt statement as he expressed his gratitude for the show’s dedicated audience and shared, “It’s a pleasure to talk directly like this to the backbone of Law & Order’s absolutely amazing audience. The time has come for me to move on and take Jack McCoy with me. There’s sadness in leaving, but I’m just too curious about what’s next,” he wrote. “An actor doesn’t want to let himself get too comfortable. I’m more grateful to you than I can say. L&O’s continuing and amazing long run, along with its astounding come-back, is all thanks to you and to Dick Wolf, but for whose vision, patience, perseverance, and unique combination of creative and business talents, none of this would have happened. I feel very blessed. I hope to see you all on the flip side.”

The veteran has 11 SAG nominations under his belt and has expressed his enthusiasm in finding new opportunities.

Tony Goldwin steps into the role amidst the other cast changes in Season 23 after the departure of Jeffrey Donovan. The series is produced by Universal television and Wolf Entertainment and continues under the showrunner Rick Eid, with Wolf and an ensemble of executive producers steering the ship.
