Hong Kong Launches Fund for European Film Coproductions

Hong Kong will offer more than $1 million per project to film coproductions with Europe under a new grant scheme to be launched this week at the European Film Market in Berlin.

HK - Hong Kong is taking a significant step in fostering collaborations with European filmmakers. The Hong Kong-Europe-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme has been launched, extending the existing Hong Kong-Asian program that began in January last year. Under this new grant scheme, Hong Kong will provide more than $1 million per project for film co-productions with Europe. The initiative aims to offer additional support amidst the challenging developments in the film industry.

Filmmakers from Hong Kong, European countries, and/or Asian countries are invited to participate. The scheme encourages the development of common ideas, fosters new talent partnerships, and supports film projects. Each successful film project can receive a grant of up to HK$9 million (approximately $1.1 million), depending on the size of the film’s production budget. Projects with budgets below this ceiling could be fully funded by the grant, while those with higher costs would need to source the balance from other public or private sources.

Dr Wilfred Wong, Chairman of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, expressed enthusiasm about extending collaboration into Europe. He stated, “This scheme aims to provide funding for film projects co-produced with filmmakers from European and Asian countries, enhancing their exposure in international markets and fostering in-depth exchanges and mutual learning.”

The delegation visiting Berlin includes producers Debbie Lam, Jacqueline Liu, and Saville Chan, along with writer-directors Sasha Chuk and Chan Tai Lee. This initiative promises exciting opportunities for cross-cultural cinematic endeavours.
