In 2023, India’s box office
revenue reached a record $1.47 billion (Rs 122.3 billion), marking a 15%
increase over the previous year. This impressive growth was partly due to
rising ticket prices, although admissions have not yet fully recovered to the same
level as in 2019. On the top list are:

revenue was approximately $1.28 billion (Rs 106.4 billion), which was a
significant increase compared to the pandemic-affected year of 2020. The
industry saw a gradual recovery as theaters reopened and audiences returned to
enjoy films on the big screen.
2021 the box office revenue
was around $1.15 billion (Rs 95.6 billion). Despite the challenges posed by the
pandemic, several successful films contributed to this figure. The industry
adapted to changing circumstances by releasing movies on digital platforms and
exploring hybrid models.
In 2019, India’s box office
revenue reached an all-time high of $1.6 billion (Rs 133 billion). This
remarkable performance was driven by blockbuster hits across various languages,
including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. Films like War, Kabir Singh,
and Baahubali 2 made significant contributions.
The box office revenue in
2018 was approximately $1.45 billion (Rs 120.5 billion). This year saw a mix of
commercial entertainers, content-driven films, and regional hits. The success
of movies like Padmaavat, Sanju, and 2.0 played a crucial role.
In 2020, the pandemic
severely impacted the entertainment industry. With theaters closed for a
significant part of the year, the box office revenue plummeted to $0.2 billion
(Rs 16.6 billion). However, digital streaming platforms gained prominence
during this period.
The Indian film industry
