The incredibly popular Netflix live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has become a huge hit with longtime fans and newcomers alike. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei.
US - With a whopping 2.56 billion minutes of viewing in the US over four days from its February 22 premiere, the live-action remake of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender has earnt the title of the second biggest week for any streaming title in 2024 so far according to Nielsen, behind Fool Me Once’s 3.04 billion viewing minutes in early January. Nielsen’s figures only cover viewing on television sets only, meaning viewing minutes on computers or mobile devices do not count.
The series, which features an ensemble cast including Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Ken Leung, and Daniel Dae Kim, has been incredibly popular despite its mixed reviews from critics, likely due to the popularity of the original animated series from Nickelodeon, which ran from 2005 to 2008.
The hit Netflix series is not the franchise’s first foray into live-action, as a live-action film titled The Last Airbender (2010) was released years earlier to incredibly poor reviews, currently sitting at 5% Tomatometer and 30% Audience Score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, in contrast to the 2024 live-action series’ 60% Tomatometer and 74% Audience Score. The series is also not Netflix’s first successful live-action adaptation of an anime series, with Netflix’s live-action remake of One Piece becoming a hit soon after its August 2023 premiere.
Season 1 of the 8-part live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is now streaming on Netflix. Following an immensely successful premiere, Seasons 2 and 3 have been greenlit by Netflix, with Season 3 set to be the final season of the show.
