A recent court filing by Disney has revealed their “final straw” for firing The Mandalorian actress Gina Carano. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei
US - The Walt Disney Company’s “final straw” for firing The Mandalorian actress Gina Carano has been revealed in a 9 April court filing following social media controversy regarding the actress’ opinions.
The 9 April court filing stated: “To publicly trivialise the Holocaust by comparing criticism of political conservatives to the annihilation of millions of Jewish people—notably, not ‘thousands’—was the final straw for Disney.”
Back in February 2021, Carano had reposted an Instagram post which read: “Because history is edited, most people today don’t realise that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbours hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”
Carano had also mocked trans rights, questioned the results of the 2020 US presidential election, and criticised the COVID-19 vaccine in the past.
Three years after being fired in February 2021, Gina Carano teamed up with multi-billionaire Elon Musk to file a suit that demanded that the court force Lucasfilm, the Disney-owned company behind the Star Wars franchise that The Mandalorian is set in, to recast her and pay her US$75,000 or more in punitive damages.
Joe Benarroch, head of business operations at the Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter), stated at the time: “As a sign of X Corp.’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.”
Carano has been removed from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian since Season 3, which premiered in 2023. The Mandalorian sub-franchise will continue in the feature film The Mandalorian & Grogu, which was recently dated for May 22 2026.
