Trending Hollywood Films to Begin the New Year

In light of the upcoming New Year, many fan-favourite film sequels, prequels and even threequels that make their way to the big screen in 2024, additionally showcasing films that were postponed due to the initial Hollywood strikes. By: Dylan Low

With the previous actor and writer strikes delaying production and premiere dates of several movies, these films will now make their premiere in cinemas next year. It will be featuring a variety of different genres – spanning from superhero films, biopics about famous singers, long-awaited franchise sequels to spooky horror thrillers. We look into upcoming titles that premiere early next year.

 

Kicking off 2024, Mean Girls will be screening in cinemas on January 12th. It will not exactly be a remake of the original yet iconic 2004 film, but based on an adaptation of the Broadway Musical which showcased in 2018. It will highlight a similar storyline with the addition of many songs. Mean Girls describes the life of Cady, who is portrayed by Angourie Rice. She enters the unknown world of high school when she finds herself entangled with The Plastics, the clique of popular girl Regina George. After falling in love with Regina’s former boyfriend, Cady and her friend conjure a plan to take down Regina’s position in the high school hierarchy.

 

This new film edition is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr, with Tina Fey reprising her role of screenwriter. Joining Angourie in the film, Renée Rapp, Christopher Briney, Auliʻi Cravalho round out the main character cast.

 

Moving on, the next popular film that will showcase in cinemas on February 2nd is Argylle. An action-comedy film, the movie introduces a stacked cast with many celebrities such as Dua Lipa, Henry Cavill, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson and Ariana Debose. The movie also features highly acclaimed Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays Ellie Conway – a spy novelist who discovers the events of her fictional novels are turning into reality, in which the spies she made up are coming after her. 

 

One of these imaginary figures created by Conway is the main spy Argylle, undergoing amnesia as he is deceived into thinking he is a best-selling spy novelist. While his memories and spy skills come back, he embarks on a journey across the US, London, and other peculiar locations to exact revenge against the shady organization he was part of known as The Division.

 

Directed by Kingsman filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, It will make its theatrical debut through a joint distribution by Apple and Universal. As the film is an AppleTV+ original, it will be available for broadcast on the platform following its theatrical release.

 

12 days later, a highly anticipated film that showcases on February 14th is Madame Web. As Marvel’s first film of 2024, it details the life of Cassandra Webb, a psychic paramedic who discovers her powers to foresee the future. While dealing with truths about her past, she teams up with three young women with important futures to tackle deadly forces and enemies.

 

Marvel fans have plenty to be excited about, as they will be looking to see Marvel’s next steps in the new year, in which they will have a clearer idea after watching this film. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, the suspense thriller film also consists of main characters Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor and Isabela Merced. It will be executive produced by Adam Merims and Claire Parker.

 

Audiences are sure to be entertained, through these three films to open the year. With a wide variety of film titles to look forward to, 2024 is shaping up to be a blockbuster year at the box office.
