A major report has found “notable improvements” in live sports streaming performance across three major events in 2024: Wimbledon, the Olympic Games, and the Paralympic Games.
In 2024, sports
streaming has seen significant advancements, particularly in reducing latency,
enhancing user experience, and improving accessibility. The Digital TV Group
(DTG) highlighted these improvements in their latest analysis, focusing on
major events like Wimbledon, the Olympic Games, and the Paralympic Games.
One of the
most notable improvements is the reduction in latency. For instance, BBC
iPlayer’s latency dropped from 55.9 seconds during the 2023 Coronation coverage
to 40 seconds during the 2024 Olympics. Sky Glass emerged as the leader among
IP streaming platforms, showcasing the lowest latency across all tested events.
Console-based streaming also saw remarkable progress, with a latency reduction
of over 34 seconds compared to 2023.
User
experience enhancements include proactive prompts for switching to
higher-quality UHD streams, which have boosted engagement and satisfaction.
However, some premium brand Smart TVs still experience delays exceeding one
minute, indicating ongoing challenges.
Accessibility
features have also improved, with more accurate subtitles across both broadcast
and streaming platforms. Despite these advancements, inconsistencies remain,
particularly with enabling subtitles during live streams on certain devices.
Overall, the
sports streaming industry in 2024 has made significant strides towards
providing a more seamless and real-time viewing experience, though further
efforts are needed to ensure consistent performance across all devices and
services.
