New Upcoming Disney+ Shows this New Year

As the year begins, streaming service Disney+ has planned several original films and series, which showcases new highly-anticipated titles that subscribers have been waiting on to binge. By: Dylan Low

A popular streaming platform for films and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and more, Disney+ also provides exclusive Disney+ original content in their collection. This year, the fan-favourite streaming service has unveiled their upcoming list of series and films that their subscribers can look forward to. We look into their shows that they have planned for January.

In January, BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star will continue their episode releases which premiered December 20th last year. A new eight-part documentary series, it showcases never-seen-before interviews, performances and behind-the-scenes interview moments. Directed by Jun-soo Park, the docuseries will feature the celebrity Korean stars RM, Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook.

BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star will appeal to the K-Pop fan audiences, bringing them on an immersive experience across the band’s ten year journey that consists of highlights and low points, in an interesting documentary format. The first two weeks of January will see the release of episodes 5-6 and 7-8, on the 3rd and 11th of the month respectively.

Another popular series that also continues to premiere in January, is Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The show has already begun broadcasting since last year, with an episode released every Wednesday weekly. January 3rd marks the release of episode 4, with episodes 5 and 6 showcasing on the 10th and 17th of the month respectively.  The acclaimed book-turned-series, following closely to the story of Rick Riordan’s book franchise, showcases a young Percy Jackson as he discovers more about his own demigod identity and looks to prevent a war amongst Gods. To do so, he embarks on a journey to find and return Zeus’ missing master bolt along with his friends Annabeth and Grover.

The eight-episode series aims to be different and be a more fan-favourite version compared to the original 2010 and 2013 films The Lighting Thief and Sea of Monsters, which garnered mixed reviews. Book creator and screenwriter Rick Riordan praised the Disney+ adaptation, “It is Percy Jackson the way we envisioned it.”

Rebecca Riordan, his wife and executive producer of the series, previously stated a television show would provide more time to cover the story content, “...we count on you all as early fans and we wanted to allow fans and readers to see the book the way it should be.”

A mainstream series that makes its debut on Disney+ January 9th, is Echo by Marvel Studios. A Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) miniseries, all five episodes will be available to be watched on the same day. Echo details the life of deaf Native American Choctaw and ex-gang leader Maya Lopez, as she looks to overcome enemies from Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire to return to their hometown. This takes her through a journey in confronting her legacy and family.

Played by Alaqua Cox, she reprises her role as Echo from her initial introduction from the 2021 Marvel series Hawkeye. The series also features Vincent D’Onofrio coming back as Wilson Fisk. It is directed by notable filmmaker Sydney Freeland, who is joined by executive producers such as Kevin Fiege and screenwriter Marion Dayre.
