Female Film Producers to Look Out For in 2024

Whether they have worked as producers for decades or have become one after acting for a while, female film producers are rising up and creating opportunities for women in the film industry. By Ching Wai.

US - In recent years, more actresses are taking up the producer role and establishing their own production companies. The exponential growth of opportunities for female producers to step up can be attributed to the MeToo movement, which brought women in the film industry together, as well as the Covid pandemic, which made streaming more mainstream.

As a result, there is now a good mix of female film producers who have taken on the role for decades, or have been acting for a while before becoming producers. Here are six of such film producers who are worth looking out for.

1. Kathleen Kennedy

The long-standing producer has produced countless successful films from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). Kennedy will continue to oversee the production of the upcoming Star Wars series and projects like the untitled sequel to the Adventures of Tintin.

Kennedy has received eight Academy Award nominations as a producer among other awards, and has over US$13 billion in worldwide box office receipts.

2. Emma Thomas

With upcoming titles like The Prisoner and an untitled Keith Gordon project, Thomas has been the producer of popular and award-winning films, many of which were directed by her husband Christopher Nolan. Some examples include the Batman franchise, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and most recently Oppenheimer.

One of the most successful producers in Hollywood with multiple Academy Award nominations, Thomas has accumulated a net worth of about US$40 million.

3. Margot Robbie

Robbie has produced numerous titles under her production shingle LuckyChap, including Barbie, I, Tonya, and Netflix’s Maid. The female-focused film and television production company is slated to release My Old Ass this year, and will be producing more projects like The Sims and Netflix’s Sirens.

LuckyChap has received a total of 25 Academy Award and 18 BAFTA nominations for its works, some of which the titles have won. Robbie currently has a net worth of about US$60 million, having earned US$50 million from Barbie.

4. Amy Adams

Co-founder of production company Bond Group Entertainment which focuses on elevating female creatives, Adams has been developing several literary adaptations including Nightbitch, Finding the Mother Tree and Kings of America.

Adams has a net worth of about US$75 million, and received several Academy Award nominations and wins, though not as a producer.

5. Reese Witherspoon

Witherspoon’s production shingle Hello Sunshine has produced several Academy Award nominated titles including Wild, Gone Girl, and Big Little Lies. The company’s upcoming projects include You’re Cordially Invited and Tiny Trailblazers.

Witherspoon has a net worth of over US$440 million, making reportedly US$1 million for each episode of Big Little Lies.

6. Nicole Kidman

The actress produced Big Little Lies with her production company Blossom Films alongside Witherspoon. Other titles Blossom Films produced include Academy Award nominated Rabbit Hole and Love & Death. Upcoming titles include Holland, Michigan and Netflix’s The Perfect Couple.

Kidman has a net worth of about US$250 million, and reportedly earns US$1 million per episode for The Undoing and Nine Perfect Strangers.
