5 Emerging Streaming Artists (Film / TV)

Many streaming releases have skyrocketed the popularity of actors from all over the world. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei.

Some of the most popular TV shows, like Stranger Things (2016 - Present) and Squid Game (2021 - Present), are streaming originals that have skyrocketed their stars to virality. Here are some up-and-coming artists who have risen to fame thanks to the popularity of the shows they starred in.

1. Millie Bobby Brown, 20

Best known for her roles as Eleven in Netflix’s Stranger Things and the titular character in Netflix’s Enola Holmes (2020), Millie Bobby Brown is certainly the most popular star on this list.

Prior to her breakout role in Stranger Things, Brown debuted as a guest star in ABC’s fantasy drama series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (2013-2014) before starring in BBC America’s paranormal drama-thriller series Intruders (2014) and her now famous role in Stranger Things.

Most recently, she starred in Netflix’s fantasy film Damsel (2024), and will next appear in The Electric State (2024), a Netflix science fiction adventure film, before returning to the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

2. Jenna Ortega, 21

In 2022, the Netflix horror comedy series Wednesday released to critical acclaim and brought mainstream attention to Ortega, who plays the lead role of Wednesday Addams.

Prior to this, Ortega was involved in numerous films and series, like horror film Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), Disney sitcom Stuck in the Middle (2016-2018), and Netflix’s Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2020-2022).

Ortega is currently attached to several upcoming projects, most notably Season 2 of Wednesday, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), the sequel to Beetlejuice (1988). Other projects she is set to star in include romantic drama Winter Spring Summer or Fall (2024), science fiction dystopian film Klara and the Sun, and dark comedy film Death of a Unicorn.

3. Lee Yoo-mi, 29

Though her acting career began in 2009 with a Duracell commercial before starring in South Korean action thriller The Yellow Sea (2010), Lee only broke out internationally in 2021 after her role as Ji-yeong in Squid Game

Her subsequent role as Lee Na-yeon in the successful Netflix zombie series All of Us are Dead (2022 - Present) further propelled her popularity. The actress was also named one of Time magazine’s Next Generation Leaders for 2022.

Lee is next slated to appear in the Netflix Korean drama Mr. Plankton.

4. Bella Ramsey, 20

Though Ramsey has starred in series like HBO’s Game of Thrones (2011-2019), the non-binary English actor’s role as Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us (2023 - Present) is by far their most popular role.

In 2025, Ramsey will reprise their role in Season 2 of The Last of Us.

5. Gordon Cormier, 14

Finally, Cormier is one of the youngest and most recent up-and-coming streaming artists, having risen to fame not long ago in February 2024 with Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live-action adaptation of the animated series of the same name.

Born in Vancouver, the Canadian actor debuted in Get Shorty (2017) and is scheduled to reprise his lead role in Seasons 2 and 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
