Entertainment Schools in Asia? Here are a few.

Asian artists and projects have been rising up in the film industry. It is worth acknowledging and supporting the schools that hone these talents. By Ching Wai.

Asia - These days, schools specialising in entertainment are not difficult to locate. At the same time, Asian artists and projects are gaining more acclaim and recognition with nominations and even awards at prestigious events. It is then fitting to take a look at some schools where Asian artists, aspiring and successful, come from. Here is a list of such notable entertainment schools that specialise in film, acting, and/or animation.

1. Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts)

With both campuses located in Seoul (Seokgwan and Seocho), the university offers over 1000 courses across 26 departments in six schools, including the School of Film, TV & Multimedia. School fees are about 4.8 million KRW (3600 USD) per year. Scholarships are available. Notably, the 2008 Korean action thriller film The Chaser was created by K-Arts graduates and achieved great results. They include being nominated at the Cannes Film Festival, and winning awards at the Busan International Film Festival, Grand Bell Awards, Blue Dragon Film Awards, and Baeksang Arts Awards. Other notable graduates include Parasite actors Park So-dam and the late Lee Sun-kyun, Minari star Han Ye-ri, and Ahn Eun-jin from Hospital Playlist and The Good Bad Mother.

2. Seoul Institute of the Arts

Located in Ansan, the institute offers 18 programmes of study, including film and television programmes. School fees average about 8 million KRW (6000 USD) per year, though scholarships are available. Notable alumni include Park Seo-joon (who recently made an appearance in The Marvels), Boys Over Flowers’s Koo Hye-sun, Ra Mi-ran from Reply 1988 and The Good Bad Mother, Ryu Seung-ryong with his most recent series Chicken Nugget, and comedians and personalities Yoo Jae-suk, Shin Dong-yup and Lee Young-ja.

3. Beijing Film Academy (China)

Located in Haidian District and Huairou District in Beijing, the public college offers courses in script writing, film and television production, post-production and many more. Annual school fees are about 80 000 CNY (11 000 USD). Scholarships are available for international students. Graduates from the college have gained national and global acclaim for their works as directors, producers, screenwriters, and actors. Alumni Dayyan Eng won awards at the Cannes Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.

4. Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (Malaysia)

The private international university has its main campus located in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. The college is considered to be one of the top arts and design schools in Asia, ranking highly among Asian universities. Courses offered include digital film and television, animation, multimedia, advertising & broadcasting, and more. Annual school fees average at 50 000 to 60 000 MYR (10 500 to 12 700 USD). Notable alumni include Peter Wong, the President of ACE Pictures Entertainment, who had ventured into the Hollywood scene.

5. Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

Located in the west of Singapore, the university’s School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) offers courses to hone individuals into artists, designers, animators, new media performers, and business leaders. The school has an annual fee of S$36 333 (27 000 USD) for all students. Notable NTU ADM graduates include Joan Hsu, senior animator at Ubiso Singapore, Shoki Lin, freelance writer, director, and cinematographer, and Geraldine Kang, visual artist and full-time lecturer at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).

There are many more entertainment schools across Asia that achieved top rankings and produced local and international industry veterans. Not everyone can afford to study in prestigious film and media schools abroad. As such, there is a sense of pride and encouragement that comes with the presence of well-established and rising local film and media schools in Asia.
