Vidio Leaping in Indonesia

The Indonesian video streaming service, Vidio, has been growing in content and reach over the years. By Ching Wai.

Indonesia - PT Vidio Dot Com, or Vidio, is an over-the-top (OTT) video streaming service based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Established in 2014, Vidio and its connections to more than 21 TV streaming services have reached audiences in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Timor Leste. Selected contents are also available worldwide. In 2022, Vivio trumped Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video to be the largest video on demand service provider in Indonesia. With its growing global reach, let us take a look at some of Vivio’s content, numbers, and recent partnerships.

The streaming platform grew from about 3 000 to 4 000 monthly active users in 2015 to 40 million active users by 2020. Vidio achieved a 225% growth, or more than 5 million downloads in App Store and Play Store during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, the service has reached more than 60 million Indonesia residents who consume almost three billion hours of OTT content per month.

When it first started, Vidio was dominated by user-generated content and TV content from Emtek’s media outlets. From 2019, Vidio began producing and releasing original series on Video Premier, the platform’s premium subscription service. Now, the video streaming platform provides various content like free-to-air and pay TV channels, live streaming events, films and series, including Vidio original programs. Some of Vidio’s original series include Ratu Adil, Cinta Pertama Ayah, and Wattpad adapted series Santri Pilihan Bunda.

Vidio also provides a variety of sports content. Emtek acquired the rights to broadcast Formula One for the rest of 2021 and 2022 season when Fox Sports Asia ceased operation in October 2021. The Formula One races were aired on the FTA terrestrial channel Moji and Champions TV 4, a channel included in Vidio’s premium subscription.

Video is also the exclusive digital broadcaster of Premier League from the 2022-2023 to 2025-2026 season. Most of the big matches were streamed exclusively on Vidio with SCTV, Vidio’s sister network, with the remainder matches being aired on Moji. The streaming platform officially gained broadcaster rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup broadcaster in Qatar through a collaboration with Indonesia Ooerdoo Hutchison (IOH). Subsequently, Vidio also held broadcaster rights for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina, 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia, and the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

In March 2019, Emtek invested IDR 240 billion in Vidio, and Surya Citra Media planned to take over Vidio for IDR 115 billion. Vidio has ongoing partnerships with companies like FreakOut Indonesia and Korean production and marketing company Arimoa. In 2021, Vidio received $150 million from Affinity Equity Partners, one of the largest dedicated Asian private equity firms. The streaming service secured a $45 million funding the next year from investors like PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa Tbk (DSSA), Grab LA Ptr Ltd, and PT Ekonomi Baru Investasi Teknologi (EBIT).

The service was originally owned by Mediatama Anugrah Citra, and is now owned by Surya Citra Media. Both company owners are subsidiaries of Emtek.
