Over the years in Hollywood women have played a vital role in breaking stereotypes through playing diverse roles in films, leaving their indelible mark on cinema. This list includes the top female actors who have had starring roles in the last few years, both in film and TV.

A study from the Centre for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University found that female characters accounted for 31% of lead characters in the top 100-grossing films in 2022, a historical high. Scarlett Johansson is one of the most loved actresses globally, earning $56 million annually. She's well known for her portrayal of 'Black Widow' as well as her appearance in the Avengers franchise, 'Avengers: Endgame', 'Avengers: Infinity War' and more. She earned the crown for the world's highest actress in 2018 and 2019.

Sofia Vergara ties with Johansson, earning an annual salary of $56 million. The actress, producer and businesswoman is best known for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC sitcom 'Modern Family'. She scooped 4 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Reese Witherspoon receives an annual pay of $35 million. She is also rumoured to have a net worth of $400 million. She is well-known for her role in the cult classic box offices 'Legally Blonde' and 'Sweet Home Alabama'. The actress-producer also co-founded Hello Sunshine, a media company along with Strand Equity Founder and Managing Partner Seth Rodsky in 2016.

Angelina Jolie has been named the highest-paid actress in Hollywood more than once, currently earning a keep of $34 million annually. She has been quoted one of the most influential personalities in the media, by various media outlets. Known for her roles in 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' and 'Maleficent', Jolie is a versatile actress who brings life to every role she takes on.
