France - This year’s Cannes Film Festival, happening from 14 to 25 May, will have an Immersive Competition section running from 15 to 24 May. This is the first time a selection of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) films will be screened at the highly acclaimed film festival.

A total of eight competition titles and six out-of-competition titles are included in the lineup. The works showcase next level VR and AR techniques, including location-based VR, mixed reality (MR) experiences, projection mapping, and holographic works.

Talents featured in the immersive works include Cate Blanchett, Charithra Chandran, Colin Farrell, Jessica Chastain, and Millie Bobby Brown.

The competition titles include works from France, Taiwan, and co-productions between regions like the U.K., the U.S., France, Romania, Taiwan, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, and Luxembourg. Among the titles, Evolver, which has Blanchett as part of the voice cast, will have its French premiere at the festival, while Maya: The Birth of a Superhero, which sees Bridgeton star Chandran as one of its English voices, will have its European premiere at the festival.

The out-of-competition titles include co-productions between regions like France, the U.S., Germany, Argentina, the U.K., Taiwan, Luxembourg, and South Korea. Gloomy Eyes, with Farrell for its English voice, and Spheres, which has Chastain and Brown among its cast, are just a few of the participating titles.

The best immersive title will be presented at the Immersive Competition section’s closing ceremony on 23 May. The full list of titles and their details can be found on the Cannes Film Festival website.
