From 7 January 2025, Vodafone Deutschland will distribute the TV channels of German public broadcaster ARD exclusively in HD resolution on its cable network; SD distribution will be discontinued.
Germany - Vodafone Deutschland has
announced a significant shift in its broadcasting strategy, set to take effect
on January 7, 2025. The company will discontinue the standard definition (SD)
distribution of ARD channels on its cable network, transitioning to exclusive
high definition (HD) broadcasting12. This change will affect ARD’s general
interest service, Das Erste, and its regional channels.
The decision aligns with broader industry trends
towards HD as the standard for television broadcasting. According to Vodafone,
over 98% of its more than 11 million cable TV customers already use HD-capable
receivers. The remaining customers, who still rely on older SD-only receivers,
will be provided with support and information to facilitate the transition.
These older receivers, primarily from Kabel Deutschland or Unitymedia, are more
than 12 years old.
The move to HD is not just about improving picture
quality. Vodafone plans to repurpose the bandwidth freed up by discontinuing SD
channels to enhance internet performance and data rates for its customers. This
reallocation of resources is expected to provide a more robust and faster
internet experience, reflecting the growing demand for high-speed connectivity
in households.
On the same date, ARD will also cease SD broadcasting
of its channels via the Astra satellite system at 19.2° East. This synchronized
shift underscores a coordinated effort to phase out SD broadcasting across
multiple platforms, ensuring a uniform viewing experience for audiences.
For customers who may face challenges with the
transition, Vodafone has committed to offering comprehensive support. This
includes a dedicated service page with detailed information and assistance to
ensure a smooth switchover. The company emphasizes that HD-capable TV
receivers, compatible with older televisions, are readily available from
specialist retailers.
In summary, Vodafone’s decision to switch off ARD
channels in SD marks a significant step towards modernizing its broadcasting
infrastructure. By embracing HD exclusively, the company aims to enhance both
the viewing experience and internet service quality for its customers.
