Eccho Rights CEO Fredrik Af Malmborg Steps Down

The Scandi distributor will be undergoing a significant leadership transition with its long-standing CEO and co-founder Fredrik Af Malmborg relinquishes his role. By: Theng Min Yee

In a significant development, Fredrik Af Malmborg is resigning from his position as CEO of Swedish distributor Eccho Rights, effective immediately. This move follows Night Train Media's acquisition of a majority stake in the company last year.

Taking the helm as interim CEO is Herbert L. Kloiber, Chairman of the Eccho Rights board and CEO of Eccho's parent company, Night Train Media. This transition is part of the ongoing integration process of the group.

Last July, German firm Night Train assumed control of Eccho Rights from Korean media group CJ ENM. Af Malmborg continued in his role at the time, while co-founder Nicola Söderlund retired.

Kloiber commended Af Malmborg's leadership, acknowledging his "vision and determination" as instrumental in establishing Eccho Rights' strong reputation and success, particularly in building an extensive content portfolio and a trusted brand for Turkish drama series worldwide. Eccho Rights has announced a renewed focus on Turkish drama, with Handan Özkubat leading the sales efforts.

In light of this leadership shift, Oskar Malmquist, who has been heading business affairs at Eccho since 2019, has been promoted to Chief Operations Officer. Kloiber expressed confidence in Malmquist's ability to enhance operational efficiencies and drive cross-functional processes within the Night Train Media group.

Adam Barth has also been named Director of Co-productions and Distribution within Night Train Media's content team. In his new role, he will lead the sales team for English-language content.

Recent executive appointments include Tess Charman from Avalon, who joined last month to spearhead distribution across Europe. Additionally, Caitlin Meek-O'Connor from Little Dot Studios was hired as Commercial Digital Director to lead the direct-to-consumer team.

Annually, Eccho Rights distributes approximately 17,000 hours of drama series worldwide, including notable titles such as Ömer, Desperate Measures, Golden Boy, and Granite Harbour.
