The reality show, inspired by the hit drama series, faces legal turbulence amid revelations of harsh filming conditions and alleged safety breaches. By: Wee Yan Ling
CEO Daniel Slade of Express Solicitors revealed that the firm is representing contestants who have sustained injuries and is seeking compensation for their harrowing experiences endured throughout the reality competition.
The production company, Studio Lambert, has received claims marking the initial phase of potential legal proceedings. Express Solicitors alleges that the contestants from the series have sustained injuries ranging from nerve damage to hypothermia as a result of the lack of standards in upholding adequate health and safety standards during the production. The firm is representing two contestants as for now, however, it remains in contact with the other potential claimants.
The unspeakable conditions were described to be freezing temperature during the shooting of the first episode’s “Red Light, Green Light” game. Though it seemed like a brief sequence on screen, the filming took hours to film. This experience had exposed participants to harsh cold as the temperate dip to 27 degrees fahrenheit. Individuals were carried out by medics and the fear of elimination led to the lack of communication between members.
Express Solicitors have underscored the long-term health implications of the injuries inflicted which encompassed hypothermia paired with ill-fitting clothing, unable to protect the wearer from the unforgiving weather.
Executive producer Stephen Lambert defended the show’s challenges, “We’re giving away the largest prize in TV competition history. It wasn’t going to be a walk in the park to win $4.56 million. But equally, although there were moments when it was quite tough, and I wouldn’t necessarily want to eat in that dormitory every night for the rest of my life, [being on the show] was a lot nicer and a lot easier than an awful lot of unscripted shows — compared to some of the survival shows that have been made, or compared to a whole bunch of successful shows in the States and in the rest of the world. This is no harder than those and in lots of shows you have people sometimes treated for mild complaints, which is what happened in that particular game.”
